One of the first independent tyre distributors in the UK
BMTR was established in 1919 by Jack Smith to decisively meet the surging demand for vehicle tyres. Strategically located on Broad Street in Birmingham, the ‘Birmingham Motor Tyre Repository’ quickly became the go-to source for an extensive range of tyres, tubes, and wheels.
Our robust involvement in Motorsport began in 1959 when our former chairman, Don Smith, took the reins by racing Jaguars in UK National Racing. The BMTR Racing Jaguars dominated the circuits throughout the early 1960s, becoming a prominent fixture across the country. It was also during this pivotal time that we initiated our race tyre services, proudly providing a limited Dunlop service at Club meetings.

Race Heritage
BMTR’s journey into the world of motorsport began in 1959, spearheaded by our former chairman, Don Smith, who took to the track racing Jaguars in UK National Racing. These iconic BMTR Racing Jaguars quickly became a legendary presence at circuits across the country throughout the early 1960s.
Our commitment to racing was further solidified during this time as we provided essential Dunlop tyre services at club meetings, laying the groundwork for our enduring legacy in the motorsport community.
The Team
The BMTR Motorsport team boasts extensive experience and an unwavering passion for delivering exceptional service over the phone and at circuits and hillclimbs throughout the UK and Europe.
Our former Managing Director, Paul Smith, has expertly continued his father’s legacy, starting with kart racing and swiftly ascending to become one of the top Formula Ford drivers in 1977.
His impressive career saw him climb the single-seater ranks, competing in European Formula 2 in 1981. A strategic pivot to sports cars yielded remarkable success at Le Mans in 1982 and 1983, where he clinched the class victory both times before our expanding racing tyre business necessitated his retirement. Paul made a triumphant return to historic racing in an F1 Ensign in 1992, achieving immediate success. Our deep-rooted enthusiasm for motorsport, coupled with our thorough understanding of race cars from both the cockpit and the pit lane, positions BMTR as the go-to authority for advising you on the ideal tyres for your competition car.
Continuing the Smith family legacy, Paul’s son Rob is making his mark in British motorsport by excelling in British Formula Ford, the Renault Clio Cup, and the Mini Challenge, consistently delivering outstanding results.
